Typhoon Warnings to Have 3 Classes

Written: 2005-05-12 16:40:39Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

The nation's new typhoon warning system will classify storms into three classes according to wind velocity and rainfall.

The Korea Meteorological Administration on Thursday said it will also forecast typhoon routes up to 72 hours in advance from the current 48 hours.

Under the new system, Typhoon Rusa, which hit in 2002 with gale winds of 57 meters per second and eight-hundred-70 millimeters of rain in Gangwon Province, would trigger a level one warning according to wind velocity.

The weather watchdog said disaster prevention agencies can now better prepare for the recent wave of more powerful typhoons.
