Park Reaches N.Pole to Complete Grand Slam Expedition

World-renowned climber Park Young-seok successfully reached the North Pole to complete the world's first "grand slam" in mountaineering.

Park previously conquered 14 giant peaks of the Himalayas that are each over 8,000 meters high, the seven highest peaks on each continent, and the three most extreme points on earth, making him the first alpinist to earn the grand slam title.

A four-member team led by the 42-year-old Park set foot on the North Pole on 4:45 am Sunday, Seoul time, delivering the news to Yonhap news agency in Seoul over a satellite phone.

Saying that he had stepped exactly on the 90 degrees north latitude, Park thanked his team members for enduring the difficult journey.

He also thanked the Korean public for its support.
