President Roh Moo-hyun is pledging his full-fledged support for the Daedeok Science Town so that it can serve as a successful model of an innovation zone.
Roh said Thursday that the government will also maximize the advantages of the tech-savvy town and commercialize research results, to compensate for the lackluster R&D sector of the city.
The president was speaking at a ceremony to outline his vision of the Daedeok Research and Development Special Zone in Daejeon, South Chungcheong Province.
He said the zone's key role is to have technologies developed there trickle down to small venture firms and to successfully market such innovations for commercial use.
Roh added that the complex is expected to provide one-stop service suitable for venture companies in terms of finance, capital, technology and market reform.
The National Assembly passed a law to establish an R&D zone in Daejeon last December with financial, tax and administrative benefits. The law will take effect on July 1.
