Japan to Warn Six Nations of Possible Tsunamis

Written: 2005-03-26 15:02:35Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

Japan from Monday will alert six West Pacific nations on where and when tsunamis caused by earthquakes might hit their shores.

An official at the Meteorological Agency in Tokyo said Friday that the six countries are China, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Russia and South Korea.

If quakes of over magnitude 6.5 strike, the agency will issue warnings on whether a tsunami will hit and related data to the six nations.

The new service is expected to supplement less detailed tsunami alerts issued to 26 Pacific Ocean nations by a UN-coordinated network in Hawaii.
