KAIST Head Advises S.Korea to Upgrade R&D Investment Model

Robert B. Laughlin, president of the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), says South Korea should upgrade its R&D investment model toward that of advanced countries to resolve problems in local science and technology R&D.

The Nobel laureate made the remarks on Thursday during a lecture at the National Assembly.

In his speech, the KAIST president proposed a Dutch model for South Korea, saying that R&D investments in the Netherlands are thoroughly implemented according to principles of market economy.

Laughlin added that Korean universities should focus on research whose achievements and results are released to the public and not hoarded by the government.

The president also said that universities should capitalize on the industry, rather than being dominated by it.
