S.Korean Researcher Solves Mystery of Saturn's Auroras

A South Korean scientist says he has uncovered the characteristic properties of Saturn's auroras, in cooperation with a U.S. research team.

Researcher Kim Joo-hwan at Yonsei University said on Thursday that he and a U.S. research team led by Prof. John Clarke of Boston University had analyzed the pictures taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and solved the mystery behind Saturn's auroras.

Earth's auroras are influenced mainly by solar winds, and Jupiter's more heavily by its magnetic fields. Kim explained that, according to their observations, Saturn's auroras are influenced by both solar winds and magnetic fields, explaining their characteristic behavior.

The study results appeared in Thursday's edition of the science journal 'Nature.'
