Former N.Korean Football Coach Likely to Lead S.Korean Univ. Team

The former coach of the North Korean national football team who defected to South Korea last year will likely be appointed to coach a local college team.

An official at Ulsan University said Friday that the school is considering appointing Mun Ki-nam, former coach of the North Korean national team, as its head coach.

The official said Mun, who led the North's national, youth and women's teams in the communist country from 1990 to 2000, is one of the world's top class coaches.

Under Mun's reign, the North Korean youth team reached the finals of the Asian Youth Championship in 1990 and the women's team ranked second in the Asian zone qualifications for the FIFA Women's World Cup in 1994 in Sweden.

The 57-year-old coach left North Korea in 2003 with his wife and four children and arrived in the South early last year.

Ulsan University president and Korea Football Association chief Chung Mong-joon will make a final decision on the appointment sometime this month.
