S.Korea TV Broadcasts to Convert to Digital by 2010

South Korea will cease analog-based terrestial TV broadcasting in 2010 to usher in an era of digital-only broadcasting.

South Korea's Broadcasting Commission said the plan is based on agreement with local terrestial broadcasters to gradually convert all their broadcasting facilities to digital.

The Commission said starting next year terrestial broadcast stations will be obliged to transmit at least 25 percent of all broadcasts as high-resolution digital imagery, with the rate to increase every year until 2010.

Cable TV stations will also introduce high-definition digital broadcasting servcies starting from 2006, it said.
