Researchers say the undersea earthquake that spawned devastating tsunamis in the Indian Ocean on December 26th has permanently changed geological features of land up to one thousand-500 kilometers away from the epicenter off the coast of Indonesia.
"Radio Netherlands," a Dutch international broadcaster, quoted researchers at Delft Technical University as saying on Thursday that they had based their measurements on satellite data that has not previously been published.
The researchers claimed that on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, closest to the epicenter of the earthquake, land shifted by more than one meter. According to their measurements, the Thai island of Phuket, seven-hundred-40 kilometers away, also moved 10 centimeters, while Singapore moved two centimeters.
According to the broadcaster, the Delft researchers will present full details of their findings at a conference in Vienna in April.
