Temperatures Fall to Record Lows on New Year's Day

Temperatures across the nation have fallen to record lows so far this winter on the first day of the New Year.

The Korea Meteorological Administration reported Saturday a morning low of minus eight-point-eight degrees Celsius in Seoul, lower than the previous record of minus eight-point-three on Wednesday and Thursday.

Most regions across the nation posted record lows of the season with Cheolwon posting minus 16.6 degrees, Daegwanryeong minus 15.9 degrees, Cheongju minus ten degrees, Daejeon minus eight-point-five degrees and Busan minus four-point-six degrees.

There was heavy snowfall on Jeju Island, western part of the Jeolla Province, Ulleungdo and Dokdo islets in the East Sea.

The weather center said the cold temperatures will subside beginning Sunday.
