Pyongchang Selected as S.Korea's Host Candiate for 2014 Winter Olympics

South Korea has selected Pyongchang as the nation's host candidate for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The Korean Olympic Committee convened a standing committee meeting on Thursday and unanimously voted for Pyongchang as the candidate site for the Winter Games.

Pyongchang's selection by the KOC won't become official until the Standing Committee's decision is endorsed by the organization's general assembly on December 29th in a procedure largely considered a formality.

If the candidacy is approved, Pyongchang, 160 kilometers east of Seoul, wil have won a second chance to try for the Games after bidding unsuccessfully for the 2010 Olympics, losing out to Vancouver.

The host city of the 2014 Winter Games will be selected at the general assembly of the International Olympic Committee in July 2007 in Guatemala.
