S. Korean Mobile Phones Sweep GSM Market Share

South Korean mobile phone makers, having conquered the code division multiple access market, are now on a quest to dominate the global mobile communications market.

According to market research firm Strategy Analystics, Samsung Electronics took the number two spot for the first time in worldwide shipments of mobile phones based on GSM technology during the third quarter of this year. Samsung currently shares the ranking with America's Motorola Inc., each accounting for about 12.8 percent of the market share.

Samsung also topped the CDMA market share in the third quarter with 21.6 percent.

LG Electronics followed Samsung in the CDMA market with an 18.8 percent share while climbing three steps to 6th in the GSM market share with 4.7 percent in the third quarter.
