South Korea’s electric vehicle(EV) exports to the U.S. plunged nearly 90 percent year-on-year in 2025, primarily due to the Donald Trump administration’s auto tariffs and the abolition of EV subsidies.

According to the Korea Automobile and Mobility Association on Wednesday, 12-thousand-166 EVs were exported to the U.S. last year, down 86-point-eight percent from 2024.

In contrast, EV exports posted 68-thousand-923 in 2022, 121-thousand-876 in 2023 and 92-thousand-49 in 2024.

The drastic decline comes after Hyundai Motor and sister company Kia Motors expanded their production volume in the U.S. in response to Washington’s tariff policy, at a time when EV subsidies were coming to an end.

The automakers are expected to diversify their EV export destinations after shipments to the European Union, the European Free Trade Association and the United Kingdom rose 29-point-seven percent on-year in 2025.
