The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index(KOSPI) closed above the five-thousand mark for the first time ever on Tuesday, after climbing nearly three percent, despite U.S. President Donald Trump's announcement that he will increase tariffs on South Korean imports.

The KOSPI gained 135-point-26 points, or two-point-73 percent, on Tuesday to close at five-thousand-84-point-85.

The index not only hit a new closing high, but also an all‑time intraday high.

The index opened down 16-point-70 points, or zero-point-34 percent, from the previous day at four-thousand-932-point-89 and slid as low as four-thousand-890-point-72, but quickly recovered and expanded its gains.

The tech-heavy KOSDAQ also climbed 18-point-18 points, or one-point-71 percent, to close at one-thousand-82-point-59.
