The death of former Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan has drawn bipartisan expressions of mourning.

President Lee Jae Myung said on Sunday that the nation had lost a great teacher of democracy, adding that he could not contain his grief upon hearing the news.

The ruling Democratic Party said the nation was bidding farewell not only to an individual but also to an era of democracy, and the main opposition People Power Party said Lee Hae-chan's journey from grassroots activism to national office would remain a significant chapter in South Korea’s political history.

Lee’s remains are scheduled to arrive at Incheon International Airport on Tuesday morning before being transferred to the funeral hall at Seoul National University Hospital.

Lee died at 2:48 p.m. Sunday during a visit to Vietnam, where he was scheduled to join a regional plenary meeting of the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council. He was 73.
