Prime Minister Kim Min-seok will embark on a five-day trip to the United States on Thursday.

The Prime Minister’s Office announced Wednesday that Kim will visit Washington and New York from Thursday to Monday, marking his first overseas trip since taking office.

The visit marks the first time since 1987 that a South Korean prime minister has made a solo visit to the United States to discuss bilateral issues.

The Prime Minister’s Office said Kim plans to meet senior U.S. government officials, members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Korean U.S. residents during the visit.

Outlets, including the Dong-A Ilbo reported earlier Wednesday that Kim is coordinating a meeting with Vice President JD Vance during his U.S. trip.

If the meeting takes place, the two sides are expected to focus on follow-up measures to South Korea–U.S. tariff negotiations and bilateral economic cooperation.
