Prosecutors have indicted three people who were in charge of operating a passenger ferry that ran aground last month off the country’s southwestern coast.

The Mokpo branch of the Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office indicted the captain, first mate and helmsman of the Queen Jenuvia II ferry on charges of causing injury by gross negligence.

The three stand accused of failing to keep their eyes ahead of the vessel while operating it, thereby causing it to crash into an uninhabited island and run aground off the coast of Sinan, South Jeolla Province, on the night of November 19.

At the time of the collision, the captain was allegedly taking a break in his office despite his duty to command the operation as the ferry traveled through a narrow passage.

Both the first mate and the helmsman were allegedly looking at their smartphones.

Of the 267 people aboard, 47 required medical treatment for minor pains.
