Police Commissioner General Cho Ji-ho, who was impeached last year for his alleged role in the December 3 martial law declaration, has been dismissed.

The Constitutional Court approved a motion to impeach Cho on Thursday, one year after the same motion passed the National Assembly.

The motion accused Cho of blocking lawmakers' entry to the Assembly in a bid to obstruct a degree-revoking vote, and of dispatching officers to the National Election Commission and its training center.

The motion also stated that Cho mobilized excessive police force during large-scale anti-government rallies organized by the nation's two umbrella unions in Seoul last November.

Cho is the first police chief in South Korea's constitutional history to be suspended or removed from office following impeachment.
