The Korea National Police Agency has launched a unit that will take over cases left unfinished by three special counsel teams.
The agency’s investigation headquarters said in a press release on Monday that the unit will guarantee independent and fair investigations.
Last Friday, the police took over an investigation of whether former President Yoon Suk Yeol interfered with a 2023 Marine death probe after the special counsel team initially assigned to the case completed its 150-day operation.
The police will now look into whether North Gyeongsang Province police failed to investigate former Marine Corps First Division Commander Lim Seong-geun after receiving evidence that he had deleted text messages. Lim stands accused of ordering an unsafe search operation that led to the Marine's death.
The team investigating Yoon’s December 3 martial law declaration is set to conclude operations on December 14, and those looking into former first lady Kim Keon-hee will wrap up on December 28.
The police agency said the envisioned unit will take over the two remaining cases this month.
