The South Korean military recovered 25 sets of remains and nearly two-thousand articles in its recent excavation of the remains of soldiers killed in action during the Korean War.

Seoul's defense ministry said Monday that the remains had been recovered with the help of United Nations Command member states between October 15 and November 28 at the Baengmagoji battlefield in the central part of the demilitarized zone.

Based on preliminary inspections, the ministry believes the excavated remains to be those of fallen soldiers from the South Korean Army, whose identities will be verified through closer examination and DNA analysis.

The excavation project resumed, after a three-year suspension, as part of Seoul's goal to ease military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Though the two Koreas agreed in 2018 to jointly excavate the remains as part of their military agreement, Seoul launched the project in April 2019 without Pyongyang's participation.
