Former President Yoon Suk Yeol has been additionally indicted on charges of aiding a suspect's flight, abuse of power, and violations of the National Public Officials Act after appointing an ex-minister to an ambassador post during an ongoing investigation.
The team led by special counsel Lee Myeong-hyeon said Thursday that it had indicted Yoon as well as former National Security Adviser Cho Tae-yong, former Vice Foreign Minister Chang Ho-jin, former Presidential Secretary Lee Si-won, former Justice Minister Park Sung-jae, and former Vice Justice Minister Shim Woo-jung in connection with the appointment of former Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup as ambassador to Australia in 2024.
The former defense minister was under investigation for the death of a Marine when he was appointed in March of last year, and was subject to a travel ban.
The travel ban was lifted four days after the appointment, allowing him to evade continued investigation.
Lee Jong-sup returned just eleven days after his departure, purportedly to attend an ambassadors' meeting, and subsequently resigned from his post.
