Prosecutors seek a 15-year prison sentence for former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, who is accused of aiding and abetting former President Yoon Suk Yeol's brief martial law declaration.
At the final hearing of Han's trial on Wednesday, the special counsel team argued that Han, despite being the only person who could have prevented the alleged insurrection, abandoned his public duty and aided Yoon's act.
Prosecutors asked the court to consider the decree's enormous damage to the state and its people, Han's attempt to grant the martial law declaration procedural legitimacy after its imposition and his official document forgery in sentencing.
According to the indictment, Han convened a Cabinet meeting just before Yoon declared martial law to make it appear legitimate and did not call another session to revoke the decree until more than three hours after a related motion passed parliament.
The former prime minister is also accused of rewriting the proclamation to address legal flaws, then discarding the rewrite, and of falsely testifying before the Constitutional Court and National Assembly that he was unaware of the document in question.
The court earlier said that it would reach its verdict on January 21 or 28.
