A court acquitted a former Democratic Party lawmaker of bribery, solicitation, and violations of the Political Funds Act.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Roh Woong-rae, accused of receiving tens of millions of won in bribes and illegal political funds, was not guilty on Wednesday.

The trial sought to determine whether Roh received 60 million won across five occasions between February and December 2020 in exchange for facilitating permits for a logistics center and providing favors for power plant and solar energy projects.

Prosecutors had sought a four-year prison sentence, a 200 million won fine and the forfeiture of 50 million won in illicit gains.

The court excluded most of the government's evidence, including phone records, ruling that prosecutors had exceeded the scope of their initial warrant when collecting it.

The court also ruled that related testimony was inadmissible because it was derived from recordings obtained outside the warrant.
