Authorities began a joint inspection at the site of a van crash on Jeju's Udo island on Monday that killed three people and injured ten others.

The joint team, comprising police, the National Forensic Service and the Korea Road Traffic Authority, began probing the vehicle in question and will examine the event data recorder to determine whether its brake system was functioning at the time of the crash.

A police spokesperson said that once the existing high seas alert is lifted, investigators plan to transport the vehicle to Jeju's mainland for a thorough investigation.

The police arrested the driver of the vehicle, a man in his 60s, on Monday night on charges of causing death and injury under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents.

The driver reportedly told police that RPM had suddenly spiked and the car had suddenly accelerated on its own.

On Monday, the van struck pedestrians and rammed into a signpost on the island soon after disembarking from a ferry.
