A wildfire in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province, has been contained after about 16 hours.

The Korea Forest Service and fire authorities said Sunday that following overnight firefighting efforts, they mobilized about 20 helicopters at sunrise and put out the main blaze around 10:20 a.m.

The fire affected an estimated 22-point-five hectares, with no casualties reported so far.

Authorities are now cleaning up remaining hot spots and shifting to a monitoring system, and they plan to send an investigation team to determine the exact cause and the extent of the damage.

The fire started at 6:16 p.m. on Saturday on a hillside in Yangyang.

Yangyang authorities sent emergency alerts urging about 600 nearby residents to evacuate to community centers and other safe locations, and some have returned home after fleeing to safety overnight.
