A National Assembly subcommittee has passed a revised bill that would redesignate Constitution Day as a public holiday.
A subcommittee of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee passed the revision to the Act on National Holidays during a session Monday.
July 17 will be reinstated as a public holiday after 18 years if the revised bill passes a full session of the Public Administration and Security Committee and the plenary session.
Both the ruling and opposition camps have proposed designating Constitution Day as a public holiday, so there is no disagreement on the matter.
President Lee Jae Myung called for the redesignation on this year's Constitution Day, arguing that October 3 is the only national holiday that is not a public holiday, even though it marks the enactment and proclamation of the Constitution.
Constitution Day was removed from the list of public holidays in 2008 as part of labor productivity measures enacted under former President Lee Myung-bak.
