South Korea’s Navy will participate in a month-long joint anti-submarine exercise with the United States near Guam.

The Navy announced on Monday that it will join the Silent Shark exercise starting Tuesday.

The exercise, which has taken place every two years since 2007 and is organized by the U.S. Navy, is designed to strengthen joint operational capabilities and interoperability between U.S. and South Korean submarines and aircraft.

South Korea will send a Dosan Ahn Changho-class three-thousand-ton submarine, Anmu, and two P-3 patrol aircraft to the drills.

The Anmu submarine marks the first time a submarine designed and built in South Korea will take part in an overseas joint exercise.

The exercise will include submarine tracking and attack, free-play combat drills and anti-submarine warfare training with aircraft to strengthen combined maritime defense readiness.
