Police say the truck driver who caused a deadly crash at the Jeil Market in Bucheon stepped on the accelerator pedal instead of the brakes at the time of the accident.
The Bucheon Ojeong Police Station revealed on Friday that it retrieved footage from a “pedal black box” from the 67-year-old driver’s one-ton truck which showed the driver stepped on the accelerator pedal when he plowed through the market for 132 meters, hitting shop stands and marketgoers.
The driver reportedly purchased the pedal camera and installed it in the truck in the case of an accident.
Police said they also requested a warrant to detain the driver who is accused of homicide under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents.
Thursday’s truck crash killed two women, in their 60s and 70s, and injured 19 others.
Police have classified the incident as a “large-scale traffic accident,” which will be handled by the traffic investigation department of the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency.
A police official said they plan to come up with measures to improve pedestrian safety in 138 traditional markets in the region and work with merchant associations and local governments to prevent such accidents from happening again.
