Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Dai Bing has requested that South Korea and the U.S. take into account Beijing's position, when the two allies discuss the construction of a nuclear-powered submarine, as the matter is directly linked to regional security and the nonproliferation regime.
He stated that although Beijing respects the history of the South Korea-U.S. alliance, it hopes that the alliance would not "play with fire" on the Taiwan issue.
The envoy issued such a warning during a press conference in Seoul on Thursday in the wake of efforts to modernize the alliance, which includes a possible realignment of U.S. Forces Korea(USFK).
The Chinese diplomat said Beijing will express a grave concern if the allies were to respond to any emergency situation regarding Taiwan, adding that the "One China" policy is stipulated in Seoul and Beijing's document signed when they forged diplomatic ties.
The ambassador also urged Washington to take practical steps to resume dialogue with Pyongyang, while stressing that U.S. discord with North Korea is at the core of issues pertaining to the Korean Peninsula.
The envoy said China is willing to make efforts alongside Seoul to resolve peninsula issues, and that it will continue playing a constructive role in the process.
