Rival political parties have reacted differently to the United States' approval of South Korea's construction of nuclear-powered submarines following their two summits between the nations.
During a session of the parliamentary Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee on Friday, the ruling Democratic Party(DP) praised the administration for securing the approval that the nation has sought over the past 30 years.
The ruling party said the diplomatic language in the fact sheet describing Washington's plans to work closely with Seoul signals a significant commitment.
The main opposition People Power Party(PPP) questioned Park Yoon-joo about whether the submarine would be built in South Korea or in Philadelphia, as U.S. President Donald Trump had previously claimed, a discrepancy the document did not address.
The vice minister said Seoul's basic understanding is that construction will take place on home turf.
The PPP raised concerns about Washington's failure to provide the nuclear fuel it had promised.
It also took issue with the U.S. supporting "the process" that will lead to Seoul's civil uranium enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing for peaceful uses, assessing that it falls short of revising its nuclear energy pact.
