South Korea’s parliament on Thursday approved 53 noncontentious bills after a walkout by the opposition People Power Party(PPP) left nearly half the votes to be carried by the ruling Democratic Party.

The boycott began when PPP lawmakers protested the land minister’s absence from the chamber, accusing him of disrespecting parliament.

Ruling party lawmakers shouted back, and one PPP–sponsored aviation security bill was ultimately voted down in their absence.

The remaining bills passed smoothly, including a measure extending price-indexation protections to electricity fees and another offering housing aid to vulnerable basement-unit residents.

Lawmakers also approved stronger protections for parcel workers, the mandatory disclosure of EV battery information and a four-year extension of operating limits on large retailers.

Both parties aim to negotiate semiconductor and steel industry bills for a vote at the November 27th plenary session.
