A truck crashed into the Bucheon Jeil Market in Gyeonggi Province, west of Seoul, and plowed into rows of shops on Thursday, killing two people and injuring 18 others.
The driver of the truck, a man in his 60s, has been arrested.
The Bucheon Ojeong Police Station announced that the driver had been charged with homicide under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents.
Authorities said the truck plowed through the market at 10:55 a.m., causing the deaths of two women in their 70s. Among the 18 injured, three were found unconscious, and six needed emergency care.
Park Geum-cheon, a Bucheon fire official, said during a briefing at the scene that the truck driver initially reversed, then drove the vehicle forward 150 meters, slamming into shops and people at the market.
Park said the driver claimed “sudden unintended acceleration” was behind the accident. Police determined that the driver was not drunk while behind the wheel.
After reviewing CCTV footage of the crash, police said they suspect pedal misapplication by the truck driver, and added that they will request further analysis by the National Forensic Service and the Korea Road Traffic Authority.
