A special counsel team investigating whether Yoon Suk Yeol interfered in a 2023 Marine investigation is seeking the detention of two former prosecutors with close ties to the former president.

The team said Wednesday that it suspects that Kim Seon-gyu and Song Chan-jin, former prosecutors from the anti-corruption agency, committed a serious offense and could destroy evidence.

Prosecutors believe that Kim disrupted a probe into the 2023 death of a Marine by instructing investigators not to interrogate involved individuals ahead of April's general elections while serving as head of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials(CIO).

The team suspects that Song obstructed the acquisition of a search warrant for the former president's personal mobile phone and extension number at the presidential office.

It also says he committed perjury while testifying at the National Assembly last July.
