South Korea's and the U.S.’s top diplomats could meet on the sidelines of the Group of Seven(G7) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, set to kick off in Canada on Wednesday.
The foreign ministry said Tuesday that Foreign Minister Cho Hyun had departed earlier in the day for the Niagara Region to attend the G7 gathering, where he will hold bilateral talks with counterparts from participating countries.
Cho is likely to meet U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, but given such a meeting would take place during a larger conference, whether it happens, and in what format, will likely be settled at the last minute.
If the top diplomats do sit down, they are likely to discuss a joint fact sheet detailing the outcome of the leaders’ summit held on October 29 in Gyeongju.
Though it’s been nearly two weeks since the summit, Seoul and Washington have yet to release a fact sheet.
Observers say that, though it is uncertain whether a meeting between Cho and Rubio would expedite the release of the document, the occasion could at least give Seoul another opportunity to convey its views.
