The automobile industry has called on the government to minimize the potential ramifications of its updated goal to reduce the country's greenhouse gas emissions by up to 61 percent by 2035.
The Korea Automobile and Mobility Industry Association(KAIA) made the demand in a statement on Tuesday, shortly after the Cabinet approved the updated goal, under the Paris climate accords, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 53 to 61 percent from 2018 levels.
The statement said that, in pursuing the new goal, the government must devise policies to minimize employment shocks and other blows to industries during the rapid transition.
The KAIA also called on the government to hold its transport gas emissions goal steady while diversifying ways to slash those emissions.
To do so, the association said the government should adopt electric, hydrogen-powered and hybrid cars, as well as carbon-neutral fuel.
The association also proposed that the government calibrate its zero-emission vehicle targets to market conditions.
The KAIA comprises eleven automobile organizations, including the Korea Automobile & Mobility Association and the Korea Auto Industries Cooperation Association.
