Political discord is intensifying over the prosecution's decision not to appeal a ruling in the Daejang-dong corruption case, centered on a development project in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, that took place when President Lee Jae Myung was mayor.
The main opposition People Power Party(PPP) visited the Supreme Prosecutors' Office on Tuesday, where it denounced the state's choice and called on acting Prosecutor General Noh Man-seok to resign and face questioning for his actions.
The party, however, could not meet the acting prosecutor general because he was off that day.
PPP leader Jang Dong-hyeok accused Lee of influencing the decision and said the president deserved a parliamentary investigation, a special counsel probe and impeachment.
Jang also urged the court to resume Lee's separate trial on related corruption charges, which was indefinitely postponed when he took office in June.
The ruling Democratic Party(DP), on the other hand, slammed prosecutors critical of the decision and said "political prosecutors close to former President Yoon Suk Yeol" are committing "mutiny."
The ruling party refuted claims that prosecutors' decision to forgo an appeal had blocked the government from pursuing hundreds of billions of won in illegal profits reaped by those convicted of breach of trust, saying the funds can still be claimed through a civil suit.
The DP further accused the main opposition of plotting a "second insurrection" following Yoon's declaration of martial law last December.
