South Korea’s parliament will vote later this month on a motion to arrest former People Power Party floor leader Choo Kyung-ho on charges of blocking a vote to terminate martial law on December 3.
Democratic Party deputy floor leader Moon Jin-seog said Monday that party whips had agreed to report the motion at the November 13 plenary session and hold the vote on November 27.
The special counsel investigating the martial law case charged Choo with “participation in an important insurrection mission,” and the justice ministry submitted the arrest motion to the National Assembly last week.
Per parliamentary rules, an arrest motion must be reported at the next plenary session after its submission, and a vote must take place within seventy-two hours, or at the next available session after that deadline.
Separately, the ruling party rejected the PPP’s call for a parliamentary inquiry into prosecutors’ decision not to appeal the Daejang-dong corruption case, saying the issue could instead be handled through committee questioning.
Both sides also agreed to continue talks on fast-track bills such as the semiconductor special act, though no final schedule has been set.
