Prime Minister Kim Min-seok has expressed concerns about Seoul's redevelopment plans near the Jongmyo Shrine, calling the move shortsighted.

Kim unveiled the view on social media before visiting the Seoul shrine on Monday.

After the visit, Kim said the city’s plan, which would allow high-rise buildings to be built opposite the Jongmyo Shrine, could harm the building's value as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The prime minister said a decision that could ruin the nation’s culture, economy and future is undesirable at a time when K-culture is booming.

He said he will devise institutional safeguards and establish a forum for public discussion to ensure the city’s redevelopment plan does not proceed unilaterally.
