South Korea and Cambodia have launched a joint task force to eradicate online scams, abduction, detention and other crimes targeting Korean nationals in the Southeast Asian country.

Acting Police Commissioner General Yoo Jae-seong on Monday held a ceremony in Phnom Penh to mark the launch of the Korea-Cambodia Joint Task Force for Koreans, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Cambodian police.

In a meeting with Sar Thet, chief of Cambodia's national police, Yoo said there are no boundaries when it comes to protecting lives and safety and that he hopes the new task force will safeguard the people of both nations.

The task force will operate around-the-clock with law enforcement from both sides handling all cases related to South Koreans, from investigation to rescue and repatriation.

An official from the Korean National Police Agency said the agency will dispatch between five and seven officers to the task force next week.
