A former Marine Corps division commander has been indicted on charges tied to the 2023 death of a corporal.

The special counsel team assigned to the case said Monday that former Marine Corps First Division Commander Lim Seong-geun has been detained and now faces charges of occupational and gross negligence causing death or injury and insubordination under the Military Criminal Act.

Four other commanders involved in the case were indicted without detention on charges of occupational and gross negligence causing death or injury.

According to the prosecution, Lim and the others ordered Marines to lead a search-and-rescue mission during heavy rain in Yecheon, North Gyeongsang Province, without providing them with proper safety equipment, including life jackets.

A marine corporal was swept away by a current and later found dead, and a sergeant who was rescued spent a month in the hospital.
