The South Korean military has detected a ballistic missile launch from North Korea.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a media notice on Friday that the North fired an unidentified ballistic missile into the East Sea.

The launch comes a day after North Korea announced that it would "respond accordingly" to U.S. Treasury Department sanctions of eight individuals and two entities accused of laundering money for North Korea.

The military said it is analyzing details of the launch.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told reporters the same day that the missile had landed in waters outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone.

Friday's launch marks the second time the North has fired a ballistic weapon since the inauguration of President Lee Jae Myung in the South.
