Ahead of next week’s United Nations climate conference, the government has proposed cutting the country’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent from 2018 levels by 2035.
The Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment unveiled two proposals for the nationally determined contributions(NDC) by 2035 during a public hearing at the National Assembly.
The first plan aims to reduce emissions by 50 to 60 percent from 2018 levels, while the second targets a 53 to 60 percent reduction. Both are under fire from business groups and environmental activists alike for failing to build social consensus before the announcement.
The ministry said the 2035 NDC is structured as a range rather than a single figure, with the lower limit reflecting a “realistically achievable target” and the upper limit, a 60 percent reduction, a “challenging goal” based on expanded government support, technological innovation and industrial restructuring.
The final NDC plan will be finalized by the Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth Commission and the Cabinet as early as next week and formally announced at the 30th UN Climate Change Conference in Belém, Brazil, better known as COP30, slated for November 10-21.
