One person died, and three others were injured, in a gas leak at a POSCO steel mill.
Police said the victims were POSCO DX subcontractors doing machinery repairs at POSCO Pohang Steelworks in North Gyeongsang Province.
The workers inhaled an unidentified gas that leaked into the stainless steel cold-rolling mill where they were working at around 8:50 a.m.
The four complained of shortness of breath and chest pain and were taken to the hospital by ambulance after receiving emergency care at the scene.
One worker in his 50s died en route to the hospital. The three others, all in their 30s, are currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
POSCO immediately stopped major work at the plant and conducted ventilation and safety checks in the area, according to authorities.
Police said they will check whether safety measures were followed at the time of the accident, including whether the work environment was safe, as they investigate the cause of the incident and the substances that may have been leaked.
