Former first lady Kim Keon-hee has admitted to receiving two Chanel handbags from a shaman with ties to the Unification Church.

Kim’s lawyers made the statement on Wednesday in a press notice titled “I deeply apologize for my shortcomings.”

In the release, the former first lady admitted to accepting Chanel bags from Shaman Geon Jin, whose real name is Jeon Seong-bae, on two occasions.

Kim, however, denied any collusion or exchange of favors involving the Unification Church as well as allegations that she had received a diamond necklace.

Kim claimed that she initially declined the handbags but later accepted them after Jeon’s repeated persuasion, adding that she should have acted with greater caution as the spouse of a public official, that the handbags had never been used, and that they had been returned to Jeon some time ago.

Kim said that she deeply regretted disappointing the public with her improper conduct and recognized she should have exercised more caution as the wife of a public servant.

Both Kim and Jeon had denied receiving the gifts, but the shaman recanted his testimony last month, saying he delivered them to her and confirmed in a phone call that she received them. 

Kim requested release on bail on Monday, citing health reasons.
