A state panel tasked with mediating personal information disputes recommended that mobile carrier SK Telecom(SKT) pay 300-thousand won, or around 208 U.S. dollars per user, in compensation for damages incurred in a data breach following a hacking attack in April.
The Personal Information Dispute Mediation Committee said Tuesday that it had finalized a mediation plan on the payment and reinforcement of the carrier's data protection after reviewing a dispute mediation request by three-thousand-998 SKT users.
The committee concluded that SKT violated its data protection duties and failed to prevent a leak of 25 types of user information, including mobile numbers, international mobile subscriber identities and SIM authentication keys.
It said that in setting the amount of compensation, it recognized that victims suffered anxiety about the possibility of their data being used to clone their devices, as well as inconvenience from having to replace their SIM cards.
The mediation plan will take effect only if both the petitioners and SKT agree to it within 15 days of being notified. If either side rejects the proposal, the mediation will end without a settlement.
