The special counsel team investigating the December 3rd martial law declaration is pursuing the pretrial detention of former opposition floor leader Choo Kyung-ho.
Assistant counselor Park Ji-young told reporters on Monday that the team, led by special counsel Cho Eun-suk, believed Choo had played a role in the martial law declaration.
Park said that, in making the request, the team considered the severity of the crime and concerns that Choo would destroy evidence.
Prosecutors believe Choo obstructed a parliamentary vote to lift martial law at the request of former President Yoon Suk Yeol by repeatedly changing the venue of a People Power Party(PPP) vote to lift martial law, aiming to prevent a quorum by impeding lawmakers from reaching the plenary.
Asked if the team believes Choo and Yoon colluded, Park stopped short of providing specifics but said the team had seen sufficient evidence to suggest such a relationship.
Choo denied the allegations before prosecutors last month, saying he did not know in advance that Yoon would declare martial law and that he did not discuss with the former president ways to hinder the parliamentary vote.
