Prosecutors have called for a three-year prison sentence for a former police officer who allegedly leaked information related to an investigation into the late actor Lee Sun-kyun.
Legal sources said Monday that the prosecution had requested the punishment during the former lieutenant's final hearing on Monday at the Incheon District Court.
Prosecutors say that the defendant leaked information about the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency's investigation into Lee’s alleged illegal drug use to two reporters in October 2023.
The police report allegedly included personal data, such as names, occupations and criminal records, related to Lee’s case.
One entertainment outlet that received the leaked data published the contents of the police report, along with an edited photo, on December 28, 2023, the day after Lee's death.
The former lieutenant, who was later dismissed, sued the head of the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency for wrongful termination but lost the case.
A verdict is expected on December 17.
Meanwhile, an investigator from the Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office who informed a journalist about the progress of the drug case is also standing trial.
