A Japanese tourist in her 50s died, and her daughter in her 30s was injured, after a drunk driver in Seoul struck both.

The Seoul Hyehwa Police Station said it had arrested the driver in his 30s at the scene on Sunday on suspicion of drunk driving and causing death due to negligence under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents.

The driver's vehicle hit the mother and daughter after plowing into the sidewalk by a pedestrian crossing near Seoul's Dongdaemun Station around 10 p.m. Sunday.

The mother was transported to a hospital in an unconscious state and later pronounced dead. The daughter is currently receiving treatment for minor injuries.

The driver's blood alcohol level surpassed the standard for driver's license cancellation.
