The government has issued a special travel advisory for most of Tanzania, following violent anti-government protests that erupted last week after the African nation's presidential and parliamentary elections.

The foreign ministry said Sunday that the advisory had taken effect at 6 p.m. that day.

The advisory applies to all regions of Tanzania except Mtwara, which is already subject to a Level Three warning urging travelers to cancel or delay trips and advising those already there to consider leaving.

A special travel advisory, corresponding to Level 2.5 on the country’s four-tier travel alert system, is issued for urgent, short-term risks and can last up to 90 days.

The ministry urged South Korean nationals to cancel or postpone nonessential trips to Tanzania and advised those already in the country to exercise heightened caution to ensure their personal safety.
