Unionized workers at the nation's 14 airports will go on strike on Wednesday ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(APEC) summit, which will kick off on Friday.

The National Airport Workers' Solidarity announced during a news conference in front of Busan's Gimhae International Airport on Tuesday that they will launch the indefinite strike at 12 a.m. Wednesday.

The unionized workers are in charge of runway and airport maintenance as well as fire and electrical facility management.

Wednesday is the day when many world leaders are set to enter South Korea via Gimhae International Airport to attend the APEC summit.

The unions said they plan to publicize the demands of workers to make airports safer ahead of the APEC gathering.

The unions said the nation’s major airports are becoming death traps for workers as they overwork non-regular workers and subsidiary employees.

They called for countermeasures, including the improvement of work shift systems.
